How to use tides when fishing a Carolina inlet

An inlet concentrates moving water, but a tide table measures predicted water level at a station. Good planning comes from understanding that distinction instead of assuming every high, low, or moving tide creates the same fishing conditions.

Choose the same inlet and the same side when possible

A station outside an inlet may follow the ocean more closely, while a marina or bridge station may reflect water inside the inlet. Select the point that shares the most direct water connection with your fishing location. Nearby does not automatically mean representative.

Water height is not current speed

A tide table predicts elevation above a datum such as MLLW. It does not directly predict current velocity, safe passage, or the exact moment of slack water. Current can continue after a predicted high or low because water is still moving through the inlet system.

Look for a useful transition, not a magic tide

Compare the rising or falling period with daylight, wind, weather, and access to the spot. Different species, seasons, and inlet structures respond differently, so CoastCue should explain the inputs behind a planning window rather than present one unexplained score as a universal answer.

Let safety conditions cancel the plan

Inlet bars, breaking waves, strong current, thunderstorms, and poor visibility can make a promising tide irrelevant. Read current NWS alerts and local access notices before the trip. CoastCue and NOAA tide predictions are not navigation charts and do not determine whether an inlet is safe to cross.
