Spring tides versus neap tides for anglers
Spring and neap describe recurring changes in tidal range caused mainly by the relative positions of the sun, moon, and Earth. They do not describe the season, and they do not produce the same local current response everywhere.
Spring tides have a larger range
Near new and full moon, solar and lunar tidal forcing align more strongly. Many stations then predict higher highs and lower lows than during the middle of the lunar quarters. The exact range and timing remain local to each NOAA station.
Neap tides have a smaller range
Near first and third quarter moon, solar and lunar forcing partly oppose one another. The predicted difference between high and low is often smaller, which can mean less water-level change during a tidal cycle.
Range does not translate uniformly to current
A larger tide range can drive stronger flow through some inlets and harbor entrances, but channel depth, width, storage, river discharge, and friction shape the actual current. Use a local NOAA current station where available instead of inferring exact velocity from tide height alone.
Plan access as well as fishing
A higher predicted high can cover bars, marsh edges, or ramps, while a lower predicted low can expose flats and reduce access. Compare the MLLW heights at your station and keep weather-driven observed offsets separate from the astronomical prediction.
